Duke welcomes former Appalachian State running back from transfer portal

Former Appalachian State running back Anderson Castle picked the Duke Blue Devils for his transfer portal destination on Tuesday.

The Duke Blue Devils continue to work the transfer portal with yet another commitment on Tuesday, this time from former Appalachian State running back Anderson Castle.

Castle, who will use his final season of eligibility in 2025, spent the past five seasons with the Mountaineers. He picked up at least 100 yards in every campaign, finishing his tenure with 1,036 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 193 carries. He averaged 5.4 yards per run and added 141 yards as a receiving threat.

Castle’s best season with Appalachian State came in 2023 when he tallied 318 yards from scrimmage and a pair of touchdowns on just 58 touches. He looked impressive in this season’s loss to the Clemson Tigers, however, stacking 80 yards and a score on seven attempts.

Duke averaged 96.5 rushing yards per game and 3.2 yards per carry in 2024, mostly thanks to senior Star Thomas (871 yards and seven touchdowns). The Blue Devils will bring a deep running back room into 2025 with the return of sophomore Peyton Jones and senior Jaquez Moore. Recent legislation about junior college eligibility even opened a path for Thomas to get an additional year.
