The Buffalo Bills were handed a potentially huge edge over the Kansas City Chiefs in the race for the No. 1 seed in the AFC postseason in 2024.
The Chiefs (13-1) beat the Cleveland Browns in 21-7 final in Week 15. That came at the expense of quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes, one of the NFL’s best, is now suffering from a high-ankle sprain. The QB left the contest in the fourth quarter and now could miss time going forward.
As the Bills (11-3) often do it themselves, the Chiefs are keep their cards close to their chest in terms of Mahomes’ status but it could be a “week-to-week” injury. Even so, Mahomes has insisted he’s going to try and play in Week 16… but it is worth noting that Kansas City has two back-to-back short weeks.
KC plays twice in 10 days, the first is this Saturday against the Houston Texans, and the Chiefs will then play again on Christmas against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Naturally, Buffalo needs to keep winning themselves over the final three games. However, the Bills will watch the Chiefs with a closer eye throughout the coming days if Mahomes can’t play and Carson Wentz starts in his place.
If the Chiefs and Bills end up with the same record, Buffalo owns the head-to-head tiebreaker on Kansas City. The Bills and No. 1 seed and the bye week that comes with that in Round 1 of the postseason could still be alive.
