Michigan football flips an elite defensive back from Clemson

Michigan football did get some good news on Saturday with the announcement that Jordan Young flipped his commitment to Clemson.

It’s flip season, as we’re seeing players back off long-time commitments in favor of other schools, such as Michigan football flipping No. 1 recruit in the country, five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, from LSU, or Jaylen Williams and Carter Smith defecting from the maize and blue to Wisconsin.

But it’s not just prospects pledged for a long time that are heading elsewhere.

After bringing in Underwood and his teammate, four-star safety Elijah Dotson, it appears that the connection that 2025 Monroe (N.C.) four-star safety Jordan Young has with the latter made him reconsider his pledge to Clemson. Suddenly, after being a finalist for Young — who pledged to the Tigers on Nov. 2 — Michigan football got back into the thick of things, securing a flip the day after The Game.

Here’s how Young ranks according to the recruiting services:

The scouting report from 247Sports:

A twitched-up, three-phase playmaker that has done plenty of damage on the offensive side over the years, but projects best as a safety at the next level with his awareness, range and ball skills. Limited third-party verified information available exiting his junior season, but owns some of the top triple jump markers in the 2025 cycle. Comfortable working in an off-man alignment with the break anticipation to create takeaways. Fires into the alley taking good contain angles and has the foot speed to close gaps in pursuit. On the leaner side at this stage, but has displayed the strength and lateral spring to be an effective short-area tackler. As a wide receiver, has proven to be a tough cover on vertical routes with the juice to create after the catch. Should be viewed as a potential impact player at the Power Four level with multi-year starter upside. Could be deployed in a variety of different alignments, but skill set suggests he might find most success as a split safety.

Michigan is making a late push to secure as many big names as possible in the wake of Bryce Underwood’s commitment. Early signing day is fast arriving, leaving the Wolverines little time, as the period begins on Wednesday.
