Rams allowing Tre’Davious White to seek a trade amid ‘not-ideal situation for him’

The Rams are letting Tre’Davious White seek a trade despite wanting to keep the veteran cornerback in LA

Tre’Davious White was one of the Rams’ big offseason additions, signing the former All-Pro cornerback to a one-year deal. White was coming off a torn Achilles suffered last October so the Rams made his contract incentive-heavy, but things haven’t worked out for either side.

White has been a healthy scratch for the last three games and his time with the Rams could be coming to an end. Sean McVay confirmed Monday that the Rams are allowing White and his agent to seek a trade, which would give him an opportunity to contribute elsewhere.

The Rams want to continue with their current setup in the secondary so it doesn’t sound like White will be coming off the bench anytime soon. McVay was emphatic about White’s attitude and approach throughout all of this, crediting him for handling the situation well.

“He’s been such a pro about the way he’s handled obviously a not-ideal situation for him,” McVay said, via the team’s official site. “If you guys saw the way he’s practiced, the way that he’s been a pro in every sense of the word, and approaches some things where, he hasn’t been active the last three weeks. Guy wants an opportunity to be able to compete, and we love him here. We’d like to be able to keep him here, but if that is something that he and his agent want to be able to explore, we’re obviously respectfully understanding of that. And so the answer is yes, we’ve allowed them to be able to talk to some teams to see if that’s a possibility.”

As McVay said, Los Angeles would prefer to keep White as a depth option in case one of the starting cornerbacks gets hurt, but as they often do, the Rams want to do what’s best for the player. It was a similar situation with DeSean Jackson in 2021 when he requested a trade after his playing time diminished.

The Rams shouldn’t expect to get much in return for the veteran cornerback, especially with teams knowing Los Angeles is willing to move on if its best for White. A potential pick-swap or seventh-round pick might be all the Rams get.
