Former Auburn Tiger turned veteran NFL tight end C.J. Uzomah signed with the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad on Thursday. The 31-year-old spent most of training game with the NFC East favorites before learning he had been released ahead of the final preseason game.
Now back with the Eagles in a practice squad role, Uzomah will have the chance to earn his first regular season NFL snaps since December of last year, when he unfortunately suffered a season ending injury as a member of the New York Jets. The former fifth-round draft selection finished that 2023 season with just 8 receptions in 12 games played, although he did score a touchdown in prime time against the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.
Since leaving the Plains to join the Cincinnati Bengals in 2015, the 10-year veteran has accumulated 1,881 yards and 16 touchdowns over 106 career games in the NFL. The former Tiger has performed very well in postseason play however, as he averaged a very respectable 36.5 receiving yards per game in the Bengals run to the Super Bowl in 2021.
That postseason success could be what led the Eagles to take another chance on the Uzomah, especially considering the mediocre nature of the NFC this season. Although the Eagles have plenty of talented pass catchers on the roster, Uzomah could be an injury or two away from making an impact on one of the more talented teams in the league.
For now, the Auburn product will have to show enough on a week-to-week basis to earn a promotion to the active roster on Sundays. Each respective NFL team is allowed to promote two members of their 16-member practice squad to the active roster each week.
