Russell Wilson’s status for Week 2 vs. Broncos uncertain

After sitting out Week 1 with a calf injury, Steelers QB Russell Wilson has an uncertain status for Week 2 against the Broncos.

An injury could dampen the excitement of Russell Wilson returning to Empower Field at Mile High next week.

Wilson was named the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback last month, but a calf injury has left Wilson inactive for the team’s Week 1 showdown with the Atlanta Falcons.

With Wilson unavailable today, the Steelers are starting Justin Fields. That leaves Wilson with an uncertain status going into Week 2.

Wilson might recover in time for next week’s game against the Denver Broncos, but if Fields plays well and helps Pittsburgh beat Atlanta, will coach Mike Tomlin bench Fields in favor of Wilson?

At this point, that’s merely a hypothetical question because we’re yet to see how well Fields plays in his first start with the Steelers. Even if Fields struggles, Wilson’s health status is uncertain going into Week 2.

The Broncos released Wilson this spring and replaced him with first-round draft pick Bo Nix, who will make his first career start against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
