The New York Giants have elevated linebackers Carter Coughlin and Ty Summers from their practice squad ahead of a Week 1 game against the Minnesota Vikings at MetLife Stadium.
Coughlin’s elevation comes just days after he was released and subsequently re-signed to the practice squad — a move that left the Giants just 52 players on their 53-man roster.
The Giants also released linebacker Curtis Bolton on Saturday, further depleting the active roster as they are now down to 51 (plus the two elevations).
“(Coughlin) will go on to practice squad, and then we released (Jakob Johnson) off the practice squad because you can only have so many veterans,” head coach Brian Daboll said of the personnel maneuvering.
“I would say roster management stuff. I’ll leave it at roster management. Good question for Joe (Schoen), but that’s where we’re at.”
Coughlin has been a core special teams player for the Giants and will likely fill that role again on Sunday while providing emergency depth at linebacker.
Summers, a seventh-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft, spent the offseason with both the Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit Lions. He was waived by Detroit on August 27 and signed to the Giants’ practice squad a day later.
The 28-year-old Summers is unlikely to see much action against the Vikings unless it comes on special teams.
It is the first standard elevation for both Coughlin and Summers. They each have two remaining.
