Why did the New York Jets sign quarterback Ben Bryant?

Robert Saleh talks about signing Ben Bryant.

The Thursday signing of Ben Bryant brings some needed depth at the quarterback position for the New York Jets, especially as Jordan Travis continues to work his way back onto the field.

Bryant is a rookie who spent his final season of college football at Northwestern. He spent four of his prior five years (!) of college football at Cincinnati.

Last year as a super senior in the Big Ten, Bryant threw for 1.807 yards with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. He completed 62.5 percent of his passes on the season for Northwestern.

For Jordan Travis, a season-ending leg injury toward the end of his final year at Florida State. Jets head coach Robert Saleh explained on Thursday that the recovery process led to the signing of Bryant.

“Everyone’s rehab is a little bit different. He’s doing a great job. He’s working his tail off, it’s just that we want to make sure we give him the time that he needs to recover,” Saleh told reporters about Travis.

“This was always going to be a long-term project and he’s in every meeting, he’s at all the walk-throughs, so he’s losing the live reps obviously, but he’s in good spirits.”
