Stefon Diggs cracks the top 10 WRs in latest rankings from NFL coaches and execs

At least that’s how the NFL views the newly-acquired wide receiver for the Houston Texans with training camp on the horizon. 

Diggs, a four-time Pro Bowl target during his tenure in Buffalo, has received ample criticism for his finish in 2023. The Bills’ top target became the No. 2 option down after the firing of Ken Dorsey, failing to total 35 yards in six of his last ten games, including the playoffs. 

But a fresh start might bring back the All-Pro version of Diggs that turned Josh Allen into a star. Reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year C.J. Stroud is already off on the right path after guiding Houston to its first division title in four years.

ESPN‘s Jeremy Fowler surveyed NFL executives, coaches and scouts to get a feel about the top pass-catchers heading into training camp. Diggs, who led the NFL with 445 receptions over his four seasons in Buffalo, came in at No. 9, three spots lower than his ranking last offseason. 

“He still has some left in the tank and [I] didn’t see a dip in his overall ability,” an AFC executive told Fowler. 

Diggs was considered “one of the most polarizing figures” on the list given the balance between past and present. From a legacy standpoint, few would argue the former fifth-round pick out of Maryland doesn’t deserve a spot in the top 10. 

Since 2019, Diggs has totaled at least 1,000 yards each season between his time in Minnesota and Buffalo. He’s also surpassed the 100-catch marker five times while averaging 12.3 yards per reception. 

But again, it’s a common ground. One evaluator believes Diggs has lost a step or two with age.

“I saw a little decline — I think his vertical speed has tapered off a bit,” another AFC executive said.

Another high-standing AFC exec isn’t concerned about Diggs’ play but rather his attitude and fit in the offense. Stroud, who became the fifth rookie to throw for 4,000-plus yards in his first season, already has a steady foundation with Nico Collins, Tank Dell and Dalton Schultz. 

While previous teammates have praised Diggs’ work ethic, it’s been well-documented that he’s now worn out his welcome in two spots because of his attitude. Stroud has made it clear he’ll “get the ball to the open receiver,” something that could Diggs’ production. 

Will that mesh will in the huddle? One evalutor says no. 

“I question the fit in Houston,” an NFL personnel evaluator said. 

Collins, who is coming off a year with over 1,200 yards, was listed as an honorable mention and one of the top risers from last season. The former Michigan product should be Stroud’s long-term No. 1 option after agreeing to terms on a three-year, $72.5 million extension. 

The Texans kick off training camp Thursday morning in preparation for the Hall of Fame Game on August 1.
