Vikings giving Blake Brandel ‘every opportunity’ to earn a starting role

The Vikings offensive line, specifically the interior, has been a hot-button issue. Blake Brandel may prove to be a solution to the problem.

The Vikings’ offensive line, specifically the interior, has been a hot-button issue. They have a three-headed monster on the roster, but only one can start and make an impact.

According to Kevin Seifert of ESPN, Blake Brandel is the monster making the most noise.

The veteran guard has been waiting idly, playing well under Kevin O’Connell and his staff, all for a chance to start. With Dalton Risner’s departure before his eventual return, this seemed like his moment. He trained for the chance to earn the starting job, and despite Risner’s presence, he caught everyone’s eyes at the minicamp.

“You wouldn’t expect a former backup offensive lineman to be the talk of Vikings practices, and it’s not as if Brandel was on the tip of the tongue of every coach and player this spring. But it was exceptionally notable to watch how events played out at the left guard spot.”

Seifert explained that “after four years as a backup guard and tackle, and increasingly unsolicited raves from coaches, Brandel opened the spring as the first-team left guard. He remained there even after the Vikings re-signed 2023 starter Dalton Risner. . .strong sign the Vikings will give Brandel every opportunity to elevate into a starting role.”

Brandel won’t be the name that fans will know or expect a lot out of on paper, but during camp, he has shown he is worth considering to start. The offensive line itself is in very good shape, and this is one position. The point remains, however, that if Brandel keeps this up the team will be forced to reward him for his development and hard work.

Is Risner the proven veteran? Absolutely. This is the NFL, though, and the rinse repeat cycle of roster turnover doesn’t stop for anyone.
