Former NYCFC boss Torrent takes charge of Liga MX side San Luis

The Spanish head coach is returning to North America

Atlético de San Luis has named Domènec Torrent as its new head coach.

Torrent takes over for Gustavo Leal, who left his role last month amid a Liga MX Clausura campaign that saw San Luis finish 13th out of 18 teams.

Torrent served as a head coach in his native Spain from 1994 to 2006, but became better known for his exploits as Pep Guardiola’s assistant during Barcelona’s incredible run of success from 2008 and 2012.

From there, Torrent followed Guardiola to Bayern Munich and eventually Manchester City, winning plenty of silverware on the way.

Torrent returned to the head coaching ranks in 2018 when he moved to MLS to take over New York City FC.

After leading NYCFC to a club-record points haul in 2019, Torrent abruptly left his position. He took charge of Brazilian giant Flamengo in 2020, but only lasted a few months before he was sacked.

Most recently, Torrent managed Turkish side Galatasaray between January and June of 2022.

At San Luis, Torrent will take over a team that finished seventh in the Apertura table in 2023, before going on a surprising run all the way to the semifinals of the Liguilla.

But the Clausura was a different story for the club based in San Luis Potosí, as it lost 11 of 17 matches to finish well outside the Liguilla places.
