In just his rookie season in the NBA, Victor Wembanyama already leads the league in blocks. Despite the San Antonio Spurs’ vast struggles on the defensive side of the ball, he’s proven to be a menace on that end. Once the team puts some better pieces around him, the Spurs should be one of the most annoying defenses in the league.
Having Wembanyama roaming the paint behind the defense gives the Spurs a massive advantage. It’s just one that they need to get used to taking advantage of. However, they also understand how big of a luxury it is to have a guy like Wembanyama backing them up.
Devin Vassell recently spoke about how he pokes fun at Wembanyama for not blocking even more shots, noting how crazy of a defender he is. (H/t Tom Osborn of the San Antonio Express-News)
“I get on him sometimes, I say, ‘Vic, why didn’t you block that shot? ’ and he’s already had five or six blocks,” Vassell said. “It’s just crazy the stuff we ask of him and expect of him, but he’s put himself at that level. We expect it from him night in and night out.”
Since the All-Star break, Wembanyama is averaging 4.4 blocks per game.
