Iowa women’s basketball icon Caitlin Clark may not have been at her very best on Friday evening against Penn State, but the Lady Lions were still unable to knock off Clark and the Hawkeyes to keep hopes of a Big Ten title alive. Penn State fell behind early and saw the game fall farther out of reach in the fourth quarter of a 95-62 loss in the Big Ten women’s basketball quarterfinal in Minneapolis that puts Penn State’s NCAA tournament hopes on thin ice.
Clark became college basketball’s all-time leading scorers in Iowa’s regular-season finale but added another career achievement to her bio against Penn State. Clark set the 3-point record with a pair of three-pointers to pass Steph Curry for the Division 1 record for most three-pointers in a single season (men or women; Clark now sits at 164 and Curry’s record stood at 162).
Penn State will sit and wait for the NCAA selection committee to determine their fate now, which means a long week of sitting and waiting and simply hoping for the best. Penn State had been a team riding on the bubble and was the last team in according to a recent update to ESPN’s women’s basketball bracketology. How this setback will impact their fate remains to be seen.
