Nebraska entered Sunday’s high noon showdown with an uphill battle. The Huskers hosted No. 2 Iowa with Caitlin Clark, who is 39 points away from becoming the all-time scorer in NCAA women’s basketball history. Nebraska decided to spoil the surprise, upsetting the Hawkeyes 82-79.
Iowa defeated Nebraska in every matchup since Clark donned the Hawkeye jersey. Heading into the fourth, it seemed Iowa would win once again, up 69-55. But the Huskers rallied, outscoring the Hawkeyes 27-10 in the fourth to complete the comeback.
Clark nevertheless continued to put on a show in Lincoln, dropping 31 points, delivering ten assists, and hauling in eight rebounds for Iowa.
For Nebraska, Jaz Shelley finished as the Huskers’ top scorer, dropping 23 points on the afternoon. Shelley scored 15 of her points from beyond the arc, going 5-of-10 in three-point shooting. She also scored 10 points in the fourth, including the team’s final seven points.
Kendall Moriarty, Logan Nissley, and Natalie Potts combined for the other 17 fourth-quarter points. Nissley dropped 15 points in the game and went 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. Potts delivered 14 points, scoring eight points in the fourth. Moriarty scored seven points for Nebraska on the afternoon.
Alexis Markowski also scored 15 points for the Huskers, accompanying her 11 rebounds in the win for her 35th career double-double. Markowski is fourth in school history for career double-doubles and is six away from breaking the school record.
Nebraska moves to 17-8 on the season and 9-5 in conference play. The Huskers hit the road for another top-five showdown, playing No. 5 Ohio State on Wednesday night. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. and can be viewed on Peacock.
