Report indicates Spurs’ potentially surprising trade deadline plans

A recent report indicated that the San Antonio Spurs may surprise some people at the trade deadline this year.

As the trade deadline quickly approaches, the San Antonio Spurs are in a weird spot. Obviously, this season hasn’t been full of winning, as they currently lay claim to the worst record in the Western Conference. In fact, when posed with the question of what the Spurs could do at the deadline, Gregg Popovich mocked the idea of them pushing any chips onto the table.

However, considering how impressive Victor Wembanyama has been this year, it could make some sense for the Spurs to add more talent around him, regardless of what the outcome of this season ends up being.

A recent report from Matt Moore of Action Network indicates that they may just surprise some people. He noted that they haven’t been looking to sell assets but rather add some quality rotation players to the mix.

“The Spurs are not looking to sell off veterans for draft picks or build for long-term planning,” Moore wrote. “League sources have said the Spurs have called several teams looking for ready-made players they can win with. The Spurs won’t put themselves at risk for much, but they’ll use veteran players like Cedi Osman and Doug McDermott to explore their options. The Spurs are more likely to go after under-the-radar role players than stars, however.”

The Spurs won’t be making the postseason this year. They’re way too far down the standings to make a real push. However, adding solid players now could help Wembanyama develop quicker, and it may also help put them in a better position to compete in the coming years.
