From the time the San Antonio Spurs drafted him with the first pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, the plan was clear – plan for a future with Victor Wembanyama as the centerpiece. Despite some recent injury issues, the rookie Frenchman has been having a solid first year in the league, and the talent is clearly there.
The Spurs haven’t won many games, but they’ve been playing at a much higher level as of late. They’ve been in some close games, bringing home some victories in the process. But perhaps more important than wins is the Spurs continuing to develop chemistry between Wembanyama and Devin Vassell.
Head coach Gregg Popovich recently praised his star duo for their blossoming on-court partnership.
“Those are two of the people we want to have the ball a lot since they’re our skilled players in a sense,” Popovich said via Andrew Lopez of ESPN. “Seeing those two guys meld together is important for us. They’re doing pretty well.”
Lopez wrote a feature story about Wembanyama adapting to life at the center spot, with quotes from the big man detailing his play at the point guard spot, too.
Also in the article, however, was talk of the Wembanyama-Vassell duo, and the Spurs wing even chimed in, too.
“Me and Vic just feed off each other,” Vassell said. “This is our first time really kind of getting into a two-man game. I think that us building that relationship and building that type of chemistry is going to be scary once we really get it down pat. I don’t think anybody’s going to be able to guard us, so I’m excited for that.”
The Spurs have a bright future ahead of them with those two leading the way.
