If the 2024 NFL draft happened today, what positions should the Pittsburgh Steelers target? The Steelers are in a position where the next offseason could mark a major overhaul of the roster. The Steelers only have 41 guys on contract for next season and several of those players could end up salary-cap casualties.
So as we take a look at this new two-round mock draft from Pro Football Network, it is an interesting approach given just where the Steelers biggest needs are.
In the first round, PFN has the Steelers selecting Georgia offensive tackle Amarius Mims. Pittsburgh got a great one last year when they selected former Georgia tackle Broderick Jones in the first round. Mims has been hurt some in 2023 but when healthy he’s a strong run blocker and natural right tackle.
Moving to the second round, the Steelers chose West Virginia center Zach Frazier. Frazier is my No. 3 center in the draft and an immediate starter in place of Mason Cole.
In the big picture, both of these picks make sense. Getting Mims would allow the Steelers to be free of Dan Moore Jr. at left tackle and Jones to move over there. Frazier is a great pick to replace Cole and would almost certainly finalize the offensive line rebuild.
A mock draft like this puts all the onus to fix the defense, in particular the cornerback and inside linebacker position via free agency and doesn’t address the need at quarterback at all. Personally, I would have opted for inside linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. or better yet a trade back given how the picks ahead of them played out.
