The Bills had about as Bills-y of a loss as one could imagine against the Broncos. It went from a 22-21 win to a 24-22 in a blink of an eye.
How? A 12 man on the field penalty.
After Bills cornerback Taron Johnson took a pass interference penalty with seconds remaining, the Broncs (4-5) decided they were ready for the field goal attempt to win the game. After a few knee downs by quarterback Russell Wilson, the Broncos would settle for a 41-yard boot from kicker Wil Lutz.
Lutz had already missed in the game and appeared to be on the way to missing another… which he did. Instead, the Bills (5-5) made a game-deciding mistake.
The Bills lined up with 12 men on the field. A clear penalty because you’re only allowed 11 on each and every play.
With the ball moved up a few yards, Lutz didn’t miss a second time.
And for those curious, yes, there were 12 men on the field.
