The No. 4 Texas Longhorns (2-0) are garnering playoff hype this week following a dominant win we predicted over Alabama all offseason. Albeit, it’s fair to call the hype premature.
Before the team can be trusted to make that run, it needs to win games like the next two matchups against Wyoming and Baylor. It needs to win those games soundly.
The Wyoming Cowboys are not to be underestimated. They program stunned the Texas Tech Red Raiders in its first game. With the daunting task of beating Alabama out of the way, Texas has to start preparing every week with the same intense preparation it gave for the Crimson Tide.
The next four games will tell us if the Longhorns are a contender or pretender for a playoff bid. Texas has not entered the Red River game undefeated since 2009. That would be a start for the program.
For starters, we would like to see more push in the running game for the Texas offensive line. It all starts with an undersized Wyoming team. The Longhorns struggled in first half performances against Alabama and Rice to move the ball on the ground. We will watch for that development moving forward.
Starting quarterback Quinn Ewers’ level of preparation will be worth watching. The games will show what his effort level was following Saturday’s impressive victory.
Before Texas can get into matchups with Baylor, Kansas and Oklahoma, it needs to beat Wyoming convincingly. It needs to impose its will on teams. The game will reveal if the team adequately prepared over the week.
Texas will take on Wyoming at 7 p.m. CT on the Longhorn Network.
