The Seattle Seahawks are likely to be without two of their top defensive backs in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams. Pete Carroll told reporters on Friday that Jamal Adams has been ruled out as he continues to recover from a quad injury suffered last year. Additionally, cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who was the fifth overall pick in the draft this year, is also unlikely to play.
Witherspoon has been dealing with a hamstring injury and may not be ready for the season opener next Sunday. That’s a pretty big blow to the Seahawks secondary, though Tariq Woolen and Quandre Diggs are both still there and healthy.
Pete Carroll on @933KJR for the first time says top rookie Devon Witherspoon (hamstring) is unlikely to play in the #Seahawks opener:
“It’s going to be a race to get him for the opener. Might not get that.”— Gregg Bell (@gbellseattle) September 1, 2023
Pete Carroll on @933KJR says what has become obvious: Jamal Adams will not play in #Seahawks ‘ opener Sept. 10 vs Rams. Says they will take their time, that it’s a long season.
Adams off PUP list means they believe he can be back before week 4.

Adams has had a tough time in Seattle since being acquired in 2020. He’s played just 25 games in three years, missing all but one game last season. When healthy, he’s a playmaker on defense but it’s been difficult for him to stay on the field.
Witherspoon was projected to be one of the starting cornerbacks after he was selected fifth overall but as we’ve seen with Cooper Kupp, hamstring injuries are tricky and the team isn’t going to rush him back.
