Fantasy football: Where to draft Denver Broncos QB Russell Wilson

Analyzing Denver Broncos QB Russell Wilson’s 2023 fantasy football ADP and where you should target him in your drafts.

It can safely be said that the first season quarterback Russell Wilson spent in Denver was one of the biggest disasters in recent memory. Hoping to milk some of the magic that Peyton Manning brought to Mile High on the backside of his Hall of Fame career, Wilson was a bust on a monumental scale.

Below, we look at Russell Wilson‘s 2023 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

After being traded by Seattle, Wilson signed a massive 5-year, $245 million contract that the Broncos can’t get away from if they wanted to. Complicating matters further, the trade also required Denver to trade 1st- and 2nd-round draft picks in 2022 and 2023 which gutted the opportunity to add elite draft capital. The arrival of new head coach Sean Payton has infused hope that Wilson can do in this offense what Drew Brees did when paired with Payton with the New Orleans Saints.

This is by far the lowest Wilson has been ranked in fantasy drafts since his rookie season and, despite the enthusiasm being brought with the arrival of Payton and his QB-friendly offensive scheme, it’s too high.

Wilson’s ADP has him checking in behind signal-callers such as Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff (103.21) and new New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr (113.00) and slightly ahead of Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford (119.73), San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy (120.37) and Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love (120.40).

Where should you draft Wilson?

To be honest, this question likely won’t be an issue in most leagues because Wilson is currently slotted in as the 25th QB off the board and a strong case can be made for a couple of the quarterbacks ranked behind him are better options — starting with Love and Stafford and extending beyond that.

The new coaching staff was brought in to save what, to date, has been one of the worst trades in modern NFL history. Wilson’s value was often tied into his threat as a runner for much of his career, but he turns 35 in November and his days as a rushing threat aren’t what they used to be.

Wilson may enjoy a career resurgence teamed up with Payton, but the odds are that he can be plucked off the waiver wire at any team in most leagues, should your fantasy team suffer a catastrophic injury to its QB1. As such, he doesn’t warrant being drafted and mired on someone’s bench only to see the light of day on the regular starter’s bye week. Denver made a huge mistake with Wilson. There is no requirement for fantasy owners to do the same.
