AD Mitchell’s role is growing with every rep in Texas practices. Based on what we’ve heard this offseason from Eric Nahlin of Inside Texas, the Longhorns receiver could be the difference maker that makes this offense elite.
Mitchell’s emergence is to be expected. For awhile, we have viewed him as a top two receiver in the Big 12 with the ability to become the best in the conference. While some doubt the impact of his transition to Texas, the team views him as what it needs to become the dangerous offense it aimed to be last season.
AD Mitchell helps everybody on this squad, but most aids starting quarterback Quinn Ewers and much maligned receiver Xavier Worthy. Last season, Worthy was forced into the deep ball threat role which doesn’t fit him. Though Ewers misfired on several throws, many of his accurate attempts fell to the turf. That simply won’t happen if Mitchell can help it.
We’ve discussed Mitchell’s surprising twitchiness this offseason as well as his seamless route running. He is viewed by the team as “uncoverable.” While its uncertain how targets will be distributed this season, it will be entertaining to watch how opposing defenses try to stop Texas’ loaded receiver room.
We will get our first look at the receiver corps in game action on Sept. 2 against Rice.
