First impressions are huge. Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy is living proof. Following a down sophomore year, Worthy is still seeing sky high hype.
On Thursday, Worthy comparisons to former Alabama receiver DeVonta Smith became a topic of discussion. While it seems far-fetched, the similarities are certainly there.
For starters, Worthy and Smith are both wiry speed threats who can route up opponents with ease. Worthy’s quickness and agility makes him an easy comparison to the elite receiver as well.
Worthy probably isn’t going to win a Heisman like Smith did in Steve Sarkisian’s final season at Alabama. That would not preclude the Texas head coach from trying to help him put up Heisman-caliber numbers. One national college football analyst somehow appears to see that as a strong possibility.
What is certain is that Worthy is a near impossible cover for cornerbacks one-on-one. The only people who can stop the gifted receiver are Texas players, Texas coaches and Worthy himself. He will look to put the finishing touches on an impressive football career in burnt orange this season.
Xavier Worthy is reportedly thought to be “comparable” to Devonta Smith as a prospect according to Rick Spielman (former NFL GM).
Worthy is currently listed at 6’1”, 172 pounds.
While, Devonta Smith is currently listed at 6’0”, 170 pounds.
