LSU has set a standard USC athletics hopes to match in the near future

.@LSUTigersWire became the first D-I program to win an NCAA basketball national title and the CWS in the same year. #USC is trying to build that kind of juggernaut.

The LSU Tigers have had quite a year in 2023. Their College World Series championship, secured on Monday night against the Florida Gators, created historic achievements on multiple levels.

LSU moved into sole possession of second place on the all-time list of college baseball national championships, with seven. LSU broke a tie with Texas, which has six. LSU trails only USC (12) after winning its first national baseball championship since 2009.

Another very big piece of history forged by LSU is this: The Tigers became the first athletic program to win an NCAA basketball championship (men or women) and the College World Series in the same year. No school had previously done it. Not South Carolina. Not Stanford. Not Florida. Not Texas.

USC might not be ready to win the College World Series in 2024, but coach Andy Stankiewicz is certainly restoring the program. The Trojans are definitely headed in the right direction on the diamond. Meanwhile, the football program certainly (and rightly) expects to compete for a College Football Playoff berth this year, all while men’s basketball has a top-10-level team with a legitimate shot at securing the school’s first Men’s Final Four berth since 1954. The women’s basketball program has a very good chance at making the Sweet 16 this coming season.

USC is not where LSU is, but the Trojans are clearly trying to build toward the lofty standard the Tigers have set. It’s definitely a goal for USC sports to pursue in the coming years.
