North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye introduced himself to the rest of the country with his impressive 2022 season. In his first year as a starter, Maye was in the Heisman conversation at one point before the Tar Heels faltered down the stretch.
Now, going into the 2023 season Maye is a Heisman favorite and will battle Caleb Williams to be the top player drafted in 2024. But where does Maye rank going into the 2023 season?
247Sports released its rankings of the top players for the 2023 season and Maye was right there near the top of the list. The site ranked Maye No. 4 among all players behind only USC’s Caleb Williams, Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison and Georgia’s Brock Bowers:
I thought Bowers or Harrison would fall to me. But I think this is the correct top four. Maye was nearly flawless last season throwing for 4,321 yards, 38 TDs against 7 INTs and completing 67.2% of his passes. He also ran for 653 yards and seven scores. He dragged UNC to the ACC title game. He’ll be a top 5 NFL Draft pick a year from now, too. — Chris Hummer
This isn’t the first time Maye has appeared near the top of the list in terms of the best players in the country for the upcoming season. And it probably won’t be the last.
