Buffalo Bills wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis have been talking points this offseason.
Diggs, fresh off another All-Pro season, has turned heads off the field because of comments and notions.
Davis is in a different light. Entering last year, Buffalo hoped he’d turn into a top-tier No. 2 receiver. Instead, he left something to be desired. Some in western New York wonder if the Bills should look to upgrade in the receiver room at the 2023 NFL draft.
The player at the center of Buffalo’s offense, quarterback Josh Allen, dished his thoughts on both. He’s not overly concerned as one would mostly expect from him.
At the top, similar to the rest of the organization that has discussed Diggs, Allen downplayed any concern.
“Stef’s gonna Stef. I love the guy. He is one of my favorite people on this planet. He is so fiery, so competitive, he wants the ball in his hands 24/7, and I’m never gonna not like a guy like that,” Allen said via video conference. “He wants what’s best for the team.”
Similarly, general manager Brandon Beane has cited Diggs’ competitiveness as a reason to not be concerned. But much of the Diggs situation has been caused by Diggs himself and others have had to answer for him.
Diggs did not attend OTAs. They are voluntary, so no harm done.
Still, that likely wouldn’t have been a storyline at all had the 29-year-old not caused other stirs on social media and interviews–Namely when he said he was unsure why the team has fallen short of the Super Bowl in recent years.
Plus there was his sideline outburst in what went down as Buffalo’s final game of the playoffs.
But it is important to mention that Diggs has never outwardly said he did not want to play for the Bills. He also restructured his contract to help the team clear cap space this offseason.
On Davis, there is a bit more of a grey area because of his lack of production.
Beane admitted at his end of season press conference that there had been drops throughout the season. The GM did think Davis finished strong, though.
“Gabe Davis did a lot of good things this year. People focus on drops. He finished on a strong note in the postseason,” Beane said.
As for Allen, he thinks the team could put Davis in “better situations” to catch and run with the ball. But for Allen, it’s the the behind-the-scenes work Davis puts in that has the QB convinced.
“Sometimes I think when you look at stats, they’re a little bit misleading when it comes to him. But again, the dude just does all the right things, he does what you ask him to do, he goes above and beyond,” Allen said. “He’s a guy you can trust and depend on. You can’t say a bad word about the dude, he’s one of my favorite people too, we hang out a lot. He works his tail off.”
