The New York Giants made their biggest offseason splash during the free agency period by acquiring tight end Darren Waller from the Las Vegas Raiders. Waller fits the mold of what Joe Schoen was looking for in adding weapons around Daniel Jones.
Waller initially admitted the trade to Big Blue caught him off guard but Jordan Raanan of ESPN reports that it was also a “breath of fresh air” for the tight end.
Waller is excited for a fresh start in the NFL’s largest market. A “breath of fresh air,” as one source close to Waller explained.
After spending the majority of the last two seasons sidelined with injuries, the move to New York could be a fresh start — and a departure from the drama-filled Raiders organization.
The Giants are excited to experiment with their new tight end to see how he fits in their offense.
Waller learned of the trade less than 24 hours after returning home from his honeymoon. His wife, WNBA star Kelsey Plum, plays for the Las Vegas Aces, so the trade that sent Waller across the country isn’t ideal for the newlyweds.
Waller’s father, however, has to be excited to see his son in a Giants uniform. After the trade, Waller revealed that he grew up watching the Giants with his dad.
If healthy, Waller will certainly make the Giants’ offense significantly better. His presence is expected to increase Daniel Jones’ production, raising the fantasy stock of both players.
Ideally, with the offensive minds of Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka, the Giants will find a way to get the most out of Waller.
