Ohio State softball gets walk-off win to take series over Rutgers

A big win for the OSU softball team on Sunday afternoon. #GoBucks

The Ohio State softball team has had a good season so far but has been on the short end of some tight games in the Big Ten as of late. What looked like a promising season, has taken a slight turn into some adversity.

But this weekend was a successful one in which close games went OSU’s way for once, the latest a walk-off that resulted in the Buckeyes taking two out of three from a Rutgers team that’s started the conference season as one of the best in the league.

Things were scoreless for the first two innings before the Scarlet Knights struck first with two runs in the top of the third inning on a two-run homer put Ohio State down 2-0.

OSU would answer in the bottom of the fourth inning with a run-scoring double off the center field wall by Destinee Noury, followed by an RBI single by Jaycee Ruberti to tie things up 2-2.

The Buckeyes would score a go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Scarlet Knights would come right back with a run in the top of the seventh to send things to extra innings.

Neither team would score in the eighth, but then Ohio State would walk it off with a deep fly in the gap by Kami Kortokrox in the bottom of the ninth inning with a runner on third base, to take the series two games to one. Melina Wilkison set the stage with a one-out triple.

With the win, Ohio State improves to 23-13 (4-5 in the Big Ten), while Rutgers falls to 30-14 (7-4 in conference). Next up for the Buckeyes will be a double-header Tuesday against Penn State on the road.
