Chiefs RB Isiah Pacheco was celebrated during return to Rutgers

The NFL offseason is underway.

Some players are beginning the process of preparing for free agency, while others are enjoying the much-deserved time off the field. The freedom to return home or communities that helped shape their careers are highlighted as the young stars around the league is celebrated following the 2022 season.

The Kansas City Chiefs are celebrating their Super Bowl LVII victory, with players enjoying appearances on television shows and events around the country. Isiah Pacheco was one of the many feel-good stories from the Chiefs’ rookie class as he transitioned from being a seventh-round draft selection to the starter midway through the season. The former Rutgers football team captain returned to his alma mater on Thursday night to support the men’s basketball team’s matchup against the Michigan Wolverines.

The Chiefs’ leading rusher was praised by New Jersey governor Phil Murphy who was also in attendance. According to photojournalist Andrew Mills, Murphy said, “We are so proud of you. All of New Jersey is proud of you.” It was followed by a welcoming handshake courtside.

Pacheco finished his rookie season with 830 yards rushing and five touchdowns while playing a significant role on special teams’ kick returns. He never shied away from wearing multiple hats, as he described in training camp last July, acknowledging his time at Rutgers.

“Just be the same guy, like I did before at Rutgers,” said Pacheco. “And, you know, be a team player, whatever coach wants me to do, I’m gonna do it. And take advantage of any opportunities. Coming from an offensive coach at the running back position, coach Augie (Hoffmann) definitely prepared me for the next level, and I feel like I’m at a good size to where I could take on blocking.”

Pacheco brought his trademark intensity and dancing skills back to Piscataway, New Jersey, on Thursday night as he was shown celebrating in the crowd.

A nice welcome home for the Chiefs’ young star as he is expected to play a more prominent role next season, looking to build upon his breakout rookie year. There shouldn’t be much confusion about who will be the starting running back next season in Kansas City.
