According to a report from Football Scoop, Notre Dame has its new offensive play-caller, and it didn’t have to go far to find him. Tight ends coach Gerad Parker was promoted to offensive coordinator, and Notre Dame announced the hire of Gino Guidugli from Wisconsin to coach quarterbacks.
Parker spent last season, his only previous at Notre Dame, coaching the tight ends. Obviously you or I could look capable with Michael Mayer playing for us, but Parker brings 16 years of collegiate coaching to the position. He served as Purdue’s interim head coach in 2016 and called plays for a time while at West Virginia.
Listen, I’m not going to be doing somersaults over the Parker promotion by any means. I will say I’m more on board with it after doing a bit more research on him earlier today. However, the feeling is still that of disappointment because he clearly wasn’t Marcus Freeman’s first choice.
That said, I am quite a bit excited to see how Guidugli help develop quarterbacks. What can he do to boost the position? Can he continue to improve recruiting at the position? The answers will go a long way in deciding if Parker will be a success as the offensive coordinator.
