Giants’ Daniel Jones ‘disappointed’ he got emotional over drops

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones briefly lost his composure due to drops on Sunday and expressed a disappointment in himself after the game.

On a fourth-and-2 from the Jacksonville 3-yard line, New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones took the snap and hit wide receiver Marcus Johnson right in the chest at the goal line.

For the second time in the game, Johnson wasn’t able to haul in the catch. The ball fell helplessly to the grass and the Giants, trailing 17-13 at the time, would turn the ball over on downs.

In a brief but uncharacteristic display, Jones ripped off his chin strap and was visibly upset. One camera angle caught him screaming at Johnson, “catch the [expletive] ball.”

Given that Giants receivers accounted for seven drops (one negated by penalty) on Sunday, it’s easy to understand why Jones was fuming. But after the game, he apologized for the outburst and expressed disappointment in himself.

“Yeah. Heat of the moment, and I wish I could have that situation back. I pride myself on being composed in those situations,” Jones told reporters after the game. “Yeah, I wasn’t there. I’ve got full faith and confidence in the world in Marcus [Johnson], and yeah. Disappointed I let that happen.”

Head coach Brian Daboll, who regularly praises Jones for his composure, pretended not to have seen his quarterback’s frustration.

“Daniel? No. No way. He did?” Daboll said when asked if he saw Jones’ frustration. “He is like a cucumber, man. He’s really even keeled. He’s been that way since I met him.

“I think it’s a great attitude to have. I wish I had more of it.”

Jones may be disappointed in himself but precious few are going to blame him for that frustration. The team’s receivers were letting him and their teammates down all game, and it very nearly cost them a victory. It certainly cost them some points.

The Giants entered Week 7 fourth in the NFL in dropped passes but after Sunday’s display, they will likely take over the No. 1 spot.
