That Isiah Pacheco is having success at the NFL level isn’t a surprise to Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano. In fact, the former Scarlet Knights running back, now with the Kansas City Chiefs, left quite an impression on Schiano.
This week, the news was official that Pacheco made the Chiefs 53-man roster after a strong preseason. It wasn’t a big surprise given how Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has talked positively about his rookie running back.
Pacheco, a seventh round pick in this past spring’s NFL draft, was coached by Schiano at Rutgers the last two seasons. He has spoken glowingly about the program and how it prepared him for the NFL.
In talking with WFAN on Friday morning, Schiano said that Pacheco was a very unique player in terms of his physical skillset but also his mentality.
He was asked by WFAN what the ceiling is for Pacheco in the NFL:
“I think it’s very high – you know I’ve said this to every pro coach and scout that I’ve talked to: (Pacheco is the) hardest working practice player I’ve ever coached,” Schiano said.
“I mean, he just has a motor that is nonstop and I’m sure in training camp that jumped out to them. And you know he’s strong, He’s fast, he’s all those things but the thing that sets him apart is just how hard he works.”
Pacheco projects to factor into the running back rotation for the Chiefs. He also looks likely to play a significant role on special teams as a kickoff returner.
