Skyy Moore: Running back?

Rookie Skyy Moore is seeing some snaps out of the backfield at Chiefs training camp.

Kansas City Chiefs rookie wide receiver Skyy Moore is turning heads at training camp. Earlier, quarterback Patrick Mahomes talked about how the rookie was earning the trust of not only the coaching staff, but Mahomes himself.

But might he be in line for an even bigger role in the Kansas City offense than expected?

Eagle-eyed observers of Chiefs’ practices have noticed that Moore is carving out more and more time in the offensive backfield, aligned as a running back and not a wide receiver. A few days ago at practice, Moore was aligned next to Mahomes in this shotgun formation, and took a handoff on an outside zone running play:

Moore was again used out of the backfield at today’s practice, as he takes another handoff from Mahomes on this misdirection design:

As Andy Reid and Eric Bieniemy look to retool the Kansas City offense after the trade of Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins, it seems that using Moore in a few different ways is part of their approach. While in college, Moore was not used as a weapon out of the backfield a ton, as he had only three rushing attempts over his 30-game career at Western Michigan.

But his change-of-direction skills, which he showcased as a receiver on plays like this one:

Could make him a threat on designed rushing plays like the two shown above.
