Report: Sixers are expected to exercise team option on Shake Milton

The Philadelphia 76ers are expected to pick up the team option on guard Shake Milton.

As the Philadelphia 76ers get set to head into the offseason and continue to make roster changes around their star duo of Joel Embiid and James Harden, there are some decisions that have to be made with the roster.

One decision that the Sixers have to make concerns Shake Milton. The 4-year guard out of SMU has a $1.9 million team option for the 2022-23 season and there was some belief around the league that Philadelphia would not pick up that option.

However, HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto is reporting that the Sixers will, in fact, pick up that option. With that being said, this doesn’t mean that Milton will be in Philadelphia when training camp rolls around in October.

By picking up his option, this means the Sixers can now package him in a deal after the draft is over heading into free agency begins. If they didn’t pick up his option, they would have to trade him before July 1 and there would be zero leverage for the Sixers because nobody would trade for a player who would become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

As Philadelphia moves forward, they could be a busy team before the June 23 draft. They are beginning to shop both the No. 23 pick as well as Danny Green before the draft and they are also beginning to gauge interest in do-it-all forward Tobias Harris as well as Milton.
