The Texas Longhorns football program is home to two things, a once elite program struggling to find that success again, and of course one of the most intense quarterback battles in the country.
After winning the job over Casey Thompson last season, Hudson Card was quickly pulled and replaced during his Week 2 struggles against Arkansas. With Thompson out of the picture now, Card is attempting to win his second straight quarterback battle. This time he will have to fend off a more talented quarterback in Quinn Ewers.
If you have been living under a rock and Ewers’ name doesn’t sound familiar, he is the former No. 1 overall recruit who held a perfect rating coming out of high school. After forgoing his senior season at Southlake Carroll, Ewers enrolled a year early at Ohio State to cash in on major NIL deals. He then made his way back to Austin where he was once committed.
Ewers is the clear favorite to win the job in the eyes of the fans and a majority of media members. 247Sports’ Austin Nivison (exclusive content) dove into the quarterback battle detailing what he thinks of each of the gunslingers.
Starting with Card, Nivision expressed that he is not ready to give up on Card just yet.
I’m not counting Card out because Sam Ehlinger had issues with pocket presence as a freshman. Had a bunch of turnovers late in game that literally changed the outcome of the game. If guys set their jaw and decide, ‘I’m gonna be the quarterback. This is my team, and I’m gonna put in the work,’ we’ve seen guys take big steps.
When it comes to Ewers, Nivision explained Ewers has that big play factor but then has mental lapses at times. However, he does think that more time in the system will help him win the job.
I have to think Quinn Ewers, if he’s not the Day 1 starter, then he’s the Game 3 starter. He’s gonna be the guy eventually it looks like.
This battle will continue to unfold as fall camp arrives, but it will be interesting to see if Ewers can out-duel Card quickly or if this will drag on like last year’s competition.
