The Buffalo Bills did receive praise from one analyst in a roundtable held by ESPN following the 2022 NFL draft.
Not everyone hit the same note.
Eric Moody, fantasy football writer for the former world-wide leader, questioned one pick made by the Bills.
In selecting running back James Cook in Round 2, Buffalo got a good prospect in his mind. It’s the roster fit he has a problem with.
The breakdown:
RB James Cook to the Bills at No. 63. I like Cook as a prospect. He has the play speed to create game-changing plays at the pro level, and he is a very capable runner in between the tackles and as a receiver out of the backfield. Nevertheless, Cook is eerily similar to Devin Singletary, the Bills’ current running back. Wouldn’t it be better to prioritize a back who can gain considerable yards after contact between the tackles?
Cook and Singletary have a similar stature. But just because their measurables are the same it doesn’t mean they’ll be the same player. In fact, they’re pretty different.
As a prospect a few years ago, the concern about Singletary was his lack of pass-catching in college. Cook excelled in it.
Taking carries is where Singletary shined in school. While Cook didn’t do a bad job at that, it just wasn’t what he was tasked with at Georgia.
Neither guy is a ground-and-pound back to ESPN’s point. But Buffalo does still have Zack Moss.
If Moss can bounce back and be that guy? The Bills might have triple-threat backfield which… is not a bad thing to go along with a passing game led by quarterback Josh Allen…
