The first free-to-play title in Xbox Cloud Gaming’s history is none other than Fortnite.
On Thursday, Microsoft announced a partnership with Epic Games that’s bringing the battle royale phenomenon onto Xbox Cloud Gaming. That means you can play Fortnite on iPad, iPhone, and any other iOS device through a browser. It’s a clever way to circumvent Apple’s delisting of Fortnite from the App Store. Keep in mind that game streaming requires a fast internet connection, though.
How to play Fortnite on iPhone
There are a couple of requirements, of course. First, you’ll need a Microsoft account and an iOS device with internet access. Unlike other titles on the service, you don’t need an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription to play Fortnite. Android devices and Windows PCs can also take advantage of browser streaming.

Xbox Cloud Gaming Vice President and Head of Product Catherine Gluckstein claims Fortnite is only the first of many free-to-play games on the service.
“It’s an important step to add a Free-to-Play title to the cloud gaming catalog as we continue our cloud journey,” Gluckstein said via Xbox Wire. “At Xbox we want to make gaming accessible to the 3 billion players around the world, and cloud has an important role in that mission.”
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney certainly was happy about all this.
“Monumental news everyone! Fortnite is now available to play FOR FREE streaming to web browsers on iPhone, iPad, and Android via Xbox Cloud,” Sweeny said on Twitter. “No subscription required, no 30% Apple tax.”

That last bit had no shortage of shade, that’s for sure.
