2022 NFL draft: What Sean McDermott, Brandon Beane said about CB position

Some faith is being shown in #Bills CB Dane Jackson:

The cornerback position is a curious one for the Buffalo Bills.

In little surprise, the team is playing coy regarding it.

The Bills took the field for early offseason workouts this week. From OTAs, both Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane spoke via video conference.

Cornerback was a topic of discussion in more than one way.

Beane admitted he’s not settled at the position–but in the most GM manner possible.

“I’m not comfortable at a lot of positions,” Beane said. “Comfortable at quarterback–I’m not comfortable at a lot of spots.”

Beyond that, there was only one note worth mentioning. Beane said he did look into the free-agent market.

“We’ve looked at some veteran corners–But we’ve got a cap and we got to work within that,” the GM said.

In a way, that’s an admission that help is needed.

However, that’s not to say Beane thinks the position has been ignored. In a way, he thinks it was addressed with the splash moves the Bills made.

Von Miller highlighted the signings in the defensive trenches, but others followed there as well. Beane said a better D-line does help the secondary.

“Part of that is, if you’re strong up front, you can help your back end. That’s part of it too,” Beane said.

Finally, with the 2022 NFL draft a week away, the attention turns there. Buffalo’s first selection is at No. 25 overall and the position many want to be taken there by the Bills is defensive back.

If that doesn’t happen, the likely No. 1 on the depth chart for the time being will be Dane Jackson. Tre’Davious White is still on the team but Buffalo’s shutdown defender is still dealing with a knee injury–his early 2022 status is in doubt.

On Jackson, both Beane and McDermott have belief.

“We’ve got a lot of confidence in Dane. He’s played for us two years in a row and I’m a fan. I think he’s done a really good job,” Beane said.

“There’s a lot of confidence from me, and I know our staff, on those corners in the DB room. Dane has played a lot of football,” McDermott added.

All in all, smokescreen season could be in full effect.

We’ll find out on Thursday when the draft gets rolling.
