Auburn ends Tennessee Tech’s perfect season in Rocket City

Late-inning magic keeps Auburn’s win streak alive as they spoil the perfect start of the season for Tennessee Tech.

Tennessee Tech (10-1) came into the matchup with Auburn (12-2) with an unblemished record, but it was the Tigers who found some late-inning magic to come away victorious.

The game remained scoreless through four innings before the Golden Eagles struck first in the fifth inning. Ed Johnson smacked an RBI double that gave Tech the early 1-0 advantage in the game. Gholston Gillespie hit an RBI single that drove home Gabe Lacy and Jason Hinchman scored on an error from Jake Wyandt.

Auburn responded immediately with a run in the bottom of the inning. Kason Howell hit an RBI double to leftcenter to bring the Tigers’ first run home. Wyandt came around to score to get back the run they allowed on an error. Facing a 3-1 deficit, the Tigers would need to mount a comeback in the final three innings.

In the bottom of the seventh, Kason Howell hit an RBI triple to send Cole Foster home but Howell would be stranded at third. In the eighth inning, the Golden Eagles pitching staff couldn’t find the strike zone as they walked the bases loaded. Ryan Dyal would get the run home with a bases-loaded hit by pitch to tie the game. Pitch runner Garrett Farquhar would score that tying run, setting the stage for Bryson Ware to be the hero.

Ware drove the go-ahead run home on a sac fly. Brooks Carlson scampered home on the flyout to left field. Blake Burkhalter slammed the door shut in the ninth inning. He faced four batters with four strikeouts over the final 1.1 innings of the game to pick up his second win.

Tyler Sylvester picked up his first loss of the season after surrendering two runs without the benefit of an out. He faced two batters, walking both.

Auburn returns to Plainsman Park on Friday night as they open a three-game series with Middle Tennessee.
