Broncos select QB Kenny Pickett in Touchdown Wire’s NFL mock draft

Touchdown Wire’s latest NFL mock draft has the Broncos selecting QB Kenny Pickett at No. 9.

In his latest 2022 NFL mock draft, Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar has the Denver Broncos selecting Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett with the ninth overall pick in the first round.

Here is part of Farrar’s commentary with the pick:

Pickett projects as the most immediately NFL-ready of the quarterback class, which is a bit like being the best 80s band at the state fair. If he’s able to reach his ultimate potential, he looks at times like a Kirk Cousins plus, with functional mobility, an understanding of pro passing concepts, and an underrated deep ball. …

There is a one-year wonder aspect to Pickett’s collegiate career — he had never thrown more than 13 touchdown passes in a season before he went off for 42 in 2021 — but the Broncos, who haven’t had an above-average quarterback since Peyton Manning, would probably take the risk.

For what it’s worth: the NFL world was abuzz on Thursday when Pickett’s hand size was measured as 8.5 inches (small by NFL quarterback standards). While speaking to media members at the combine on Tuesday, Broncos general manager George Paton said “hand size is big” (important) for QBs.

Does that mean Denver will rule out drafting Pickett because of his hand size? It’s impossible to know, especially during smokescreen season. But it’s at least something to keep in mind as the NFL draft draws closer.
