There’s no argument here, in my opinion: The greatest Super Bowl performance of The Star Spangled Banner belongs to Whitney Houston, who delivered the United States national anthem before Super Bowl XXV in 1991.
It’s a performance so good that when I listed the best Super Bowl anthems back in 2017, I took Houston out of the running since she’d obviously be No. 1. And on Super Bowl Sunday, before Super Bowl 56 between the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals, there’s no better time than to rewatch it, with its stirring arrangement and Houston’s perfect delivery.
Here it is, from start to finish:
Mickey Guyton will be singing the national anthem at this year’s Super Bowl.
