The Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos could be playing in wet conditions when they face off at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium on Saturday.
Save for an early-season thunderstorm that caused a weather delay against the Buffalo Bills at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, the Chiefs have managed to stay dry in their games this season. Typically, this time of year, you’re seeing what’s commonly referred to as “football weather.” K.C. has mostly avoided bad weather so far this season, but that could all change this weekend when they hit to road to play the Broncos.
Local forecasts in Denver have slight chances of either rain or snow for Saturday’s game. A compilation of multiple forecasts calls for anywhere from a high of 45 degrees and a low of 27 degrees for Saturday’s game. Expect to see partly cloudy skies with estimations of anywhere between a 14% and 46% chance of precipitation. It’s possible the weather misses the game altogether, but it’s also possible they could see things get wet down on the field during the course of the game. That’s when ball security will become a big emphasis for both teams.
As for kicking conditions, there shouldn’t be too many problems in that department. Winds are predicted to be coming from the south of the stadium, ranging from five to nine miles per hour, with gusts up to 15 miles per hour. That means when teams face the north endzone, between the thin air at Mile High and the wind at their back, the kickers should have some pretty impressive range.
Should it snow, Chiefs fans shouldn’t fret. Patrick Mahomes is a self-proclaimed “snow-game guy” and he has a history of playing some of his best games in poor weather conditions. There was snow on the ground last October when the team traveled to Denver and the Chiefs walked away with a 43-16 victory over the Broncos.
If you’re planning to attend the game, it’s a safe bet to dress warm and bring a poncho just in case.
