It’s been a wild offseason for the transfer portal, primarily at the quarterback position.
With the NCAA implementing the one-time transfer rule, where a player can become immediately eligible at the next program, coupled with the new NIL deals that are flying around, it’s essentially become the college version of NFL free agency.
It’s something that programs must adapt to or get left behind. For Texas in particular, they’ve been able to land two primary players from the transfer portal over the last month.
Five-star Quinn Ewers is viewed as the quarterback of the future for the Longhorns, while they were also able to bring in an immediate impact player in Ohio State defensive back Ryan Watts.
Texas has also lost a few players to the transfer portal, which Steve Sarkisian and his staff expected in order to fully revamp the roster. Quarterback Casey Thompson was the biggest name to look elsewhere for more playing time this offseason.
Thompson is currently ranked the No. 90 overall player in the transfer portal, according to 247Sports. That marks him as the No. 15 quarterback available, behind the likes of Jacob Zeno, Zach Calzada, and Bo Nix.
After briefly being linked to TCU shortly after Thompson’s name entered the portal, 247Sports feels confident that the former Longhorn will end up at Nebraska.
There was a slight feeling that Thompson could choose to go to Oklahoma once Caleb Williams entered the portal, but the Sooners quickly landed transfer quarterback Dillon Gabriel, the No. 4 signal-caller in the portal, moments after the news broke.
