Even after landing Quinn Ewers from the transfer portal, the Longhorns were able to keep another talented quarterback in their 2022 recruiting class in Maalik Murphy.
The four-star out of Gardena, California, was a long time Texas commit prior to the addition of Ewers, but even after the announcement that the No. 1 ranked transfer was also heading to Austin, Murphy didn’t waver from his decision.
Due to COVID-19, Murphy’s junior season was shortened, and never saw him get a chance to get rolling as California high schools played a shortened compact season. Due to the lack of film, and the rough junior season, Murphy’s ranking plummeted from one of the top players in the nation all the way down to the 100’s.
His senior season was a big moment for him, as it was his first full-length varsity season as the starter. To say he ended his career in a storybook ending would be an understatement, as Murphy again overcame a slow start and lack of experience to eventually lead his team to a state championship win.
Although Ewers is on campus and will surely be the starter, Murphy seems to have the skillset and just raw talent that will allow him to be the quarterback of the future after Ewers’ time is done.
Here are some of Murphy’s best plays from his senior season.
