Joe Judge ‘encouraged’ by way Giants fought in 37-21 defeat

New York Giants coach Joe Judge is “pleased” with how his team practiced and “encouraged” by their fight, but admits they need to do more.

As most expected going into Sunday, the New York Giants were defeated by the Los Angeles Chargers in blowout fashion in Week 14, dropping Big Blue to 4-9 on the season.

The 16-point loss actually appeared much closer on the scoreboard due to a couple of garbage-time touchdowns for New York. The game was a blowout in every sense of the word and the Giants never really stood a chance.

Despite yet another disappointing loss where the Giants’ offense appeared to be as inept as they have been all season long, head coach Joe Judge said he was “encouraged” by the team’s effort.

“In terms of how we played, I’m encouraged by the way the team fought,” Judge told reporters after the game. “They continue to practice what they preach in terms of fighting to the end and playing for one another, you know, finishing what they started.”

Despite finding the positives in the loss, Judge did admit it wasn’t nearly good enough.

“It wasn’t good enough,” Judge said. “We had a good week of preparation, we have to make sure it transfers over in how we execute on the field. There were some opportunities we didn’t take advantage of. There were some situations we need to handle better in all three phrases. Make sure we get off the field and stay on the field and capitalize in field position when we get the chance.

“Simply put, you have to go out there and execute. . . In this league and how fine a line it is between success and coming up short to go out there and make mistakes, we have to make sure that we do our best job coaching. We have to execute our best way, as players. That’s the reality to have success in this league.”

In the defense of the Giants, the team is playing without starting quarterback Daniel Jones and they did recently go through a change in play-calling when they fired offensive coordinator Jason Garrett on November 23rd.

Even so, improvement and encouragement can only go so far. With general manager Dave Gettleman already rumored to be gone at the season’s end, Judge has to at least be on the hot seat and with the Giants’ ninth loss on Sunday — securing their fifth straight losing season.

“It was a positive week. We actually had a really good week as a team. There was a lot of good prep work that happened there. A lot of good things internally with the team,” Judge said. “I was very encouraged and pleased with how these guys worked throughout the week, how they handled themselves, conducted themselves. It was a good week of preparation, but obviously, it’s all about how you carry that preparation over and execute.”

It’s great that the team continues to fight through the losses under Judge and unlike the previous two coaches, there have been no signs of quit on the field. However, Giants fans are anxious to see Big Blue to turn the corner. If Judge remains the head coach in 2022, there will need to be improvement in the Giants’ win total and fast.
