Bengals’ elite pass-rusher Trey Hendrickson suffers injury vs. 49ers

A Bengals star nearly needed a cart to leave the field.

Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Henderickson recorded a sack in his NFL-leading ninth straight game on Sunday, then later left the field with trainers after suffering an injury.

Hendrickson, owner of 12.5 sacks in 13 games this season, went down right before halftime in a 10-6 game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Bengals trainers initially brought out a cart to help Hendrickson off the field. He shrugged that off and limped off under his own power, much to the roaring approval of fans at Paul Brown Stadium.

Hendrickson immediately went for the locker room, though that’s not necessarily a sign of how serious things are given that the injury occurred so close to halftime.

It should go without saying, but the Bengals are in big trouble in the second half and well beyond if Hendrickson has to miss time. The big-money addition in free agency was the team’s primary source of any consistent pass-rush and there aren’t any plug-and-play backups who can come close to his impact.

We’ll update with more when the team announces Hendrickson’s status.
