New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones (neck) has been in the red jersey and practicing this week, and most seemed hopeful he would be able to play in Week 13.
“I think I’m going through the week preparing to play and getting myself ready to play, listening to the trainers and doctors. My job is to be ready to play, so I’ll go through the week like I always do,” Jones told reporters earlier this week.
“I think there are a number of things just the trainers and doctors want to see, but that’s not really – my focus is to continue to improve and get better, and then put that in their hands come this weekend.”
Unfortunately for the Giants, that’s not going to happen.
Head coach Joe Judge says the team’s medical staff has not cleared Jones for contact and he’s been declared out for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins. In his place, veteran Mike Glennon will draw the start.
“This morning we had a meeting with the medical team and based on the information that was given and what’s best for Daniel, we have [ruled him] out this game,” Judge said.
With Jones out and Glennon starting, the newly signed Jake Fromm, who was added from the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad, will serve as QB2.
“He’s put in a lot of hours this week,” Judge said of Fromm.
Compounding matters for the Giants, Judge seemed to indicate that Jones’ injury could linger. The coach said that he doesn’t believe the injury is season-ending at the moment, but left the door slightly cracked open to the possibility.
“There’s no final decision on that,” Judge added. “There’s a gray area on when he could be cleared.”
