When the New York Giants signed Jason Garrett to be their offensive coordinator in 2020, many had high expectations for the former Dallas Cowboys head coach. After all, Garrett did well to get the most out of an offense built around a star running back during his time there.
Now, after less than two seasons with the Giants, it has become evident that Garrett’s play calling is leaving plenty to be desired on the field.
Although he had expressed patience heading into the bye week, Monday night’s offensive performance may have been the straw that broke the camel’s back for Joe Judge.
“Generally speaking, we have to do everything better — we didn’t do anything really well enough to win the game tonight,” Judge told reporters after the game. “Have to make sure we execute when we have the opportunity to make plays.”
The Giants’ offense looked abysmal on Monday night under the lights against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and has been lacking all season long. Certainly, injuries have played a factor in the lack of success but the time for excuses is long over.
Kenny Golladay, who the Giants gave a mega contract this past offseason, has yet to score a touchdown and the team has barely stretched the field all season long. Golladay had just one catch for 12 yards on Monday and the Giants.
Previously, Golladay had a blow-up with Garrett on the sideline and has since complained about his production and role. He’s also not the only Giants’ player to have done that. It’s a frustration Judge understands.
“In reference to any body language or anything at the end of the game, I’ll handle the corrections we have to make. But as a player, there are some things I would be frustrated about as well,” Judge said.
Just last week, Garrett finally admitted there are problems with the Giants’ offensive line that has effected the play calling. But players don’t want to hear it at this point. And apparently Judge doesn’t, either.
“We’ve got to put our players in better position to make plays,” Judge said. “I told the players to show up Wednesday ready to go. . . We’ll have a plan for them.”
Will that plan be a new offensive coordinator? Or at least a new play caller? It sure sounds like it.
“Yeah, put that on down, you can put that down tonight — you guys can write that tonight,” Judge said when asked about emptying the tank on his coaching staff. “Now the players have to execute, that’s their job right? It’s our job to teach them, and it’s their job to go out there execute, but we have to make sure we keep putting them in a position to have success, and it’s got to be consistently that way. So, you can go and write that down and I’m not going to debate that.”
Judge is finally angry. And changes are finally coming.
