The New England Patriots will benefit from Cam Newton’s contract with the Carolina Panthers. The two parties agreed to a one-year deal that will have Newton returning to the Panthers for the remainder of the 2021 season. That deal triggered offset language in New England’s deal with Newton for 2021. He had signed a one-year deal with the Patriots worth up to $3.6 million with a $1.5 million base salary and a $2 million signing bonus.
So with the Panthers putting him on their roster, that deal will free up $1.5 million in cap space for 2022. It appears the Patriots put in offset langauge in Newton’s contract so that if he landed elsewhere, it would relieve their cap. Any offset language in a contract impact the next year’s cap.

New England is expected to have $30,446,596 million, per Spotrac. That number will bump up by $1.5 million.
