Josh Allen channels Phil Mickelson in Bills win over Dolphins

Josh Allen channels Phil Mickelson in #Bills win over #Dolphins:

Not every game is going to be picture perfect, but at the end of the day, a win is a win.

On Sunday, the Buffalo Bills struggled vs. the lowly Miami in the first half, but ended up pulling away when it mattered. Buffalo secured a 26-11 win over Miami.

The win moved Buffalo to 5-2 on the season and 5-0 all-time after the bye week under head coach Sean McDermott.

With the game taking place on Halloween, many of the Bills players showed up wearing various costumes. Quarterback Josh Allen went with one of his idols, legendary golfer, Phil Mickelson:

“Lefty,” as he is so affectionately called, saw the getup and responded as only he could:

After the game, Allen addressed the media in his full Mickelson attire:

Allen gave some insight into why the QBs decided to go with the golf outfits on Halloween.

“We wanted to do something as quarterbacks and I was dreaming on Tuesday night,” Allen said via video conference. “I had a dream we were dressed in professional golfer outfits and what better guy than Phil, you know?”

While the costumes were entertaining enough on the surface, Allen actually gave further insight into the Mickelson connection and how it helped him during today’s game vs. Miami.

“He (Mickelson) had a chance to talk to us early on this year,” Allen told reporters. “He talked about finding kinda like your zen, finding where you’re calm and I’ve known this for a long time, I don’t play well when I’m pissed off and frustrated and I think that was maybe causing some issues early on… to that second half just trying to find that inner-peace where I can just kinda go out there and relax and that’s what we did and we did well.”

Allen was asked to expand on the golfer visiting with the Bills this season.

“That was in training camp he got to talk to us, right after he won obviously the PGA and he was right there with his trophy and the golf cart, he was on the golf course and took about 30 minutes to talk to the team and it was really cool.”

While any golf fan would marvel at the chance to speak to a player of Mickelson’s caliber, Allen has been able to translate the conversation into assisting him on the football field.

“I think it’s just self knowledge. Understanding who you are,” Allen continued. “I know I don’t play well when I’m frustrated and again, hearing that from a hall of fame golfer, one of the best all-time, to say that type of thing that resonated well with me, cause that’s exactly kinda how I feel too. Again, it helped me today and hopefully it’ll help me again in the future too.”

McDermott was also asked after the game about his team getting a chance to talk to Mickelson.

“I think Josh has his own relationship with Phil where they have this little sort of volley they’re doing back and forth with one another,” McDermott told the media following the game. “But we were able to get Phil… for a little bit during training camp and what a special moment that was for me, for our team and an honor to get a guy of that stature to talk to your team and it was a pretty cool half hour, 45 minutes whatever it was… so it was an awesome opportunity for us.”

While we can all agree it was a special moment for the Bills and one that has seemed to pay off thus far, the Bills and Allen in particular, will need to continue to channel that zen/inner-peace going forward.

A calm Allen makes all the difference for this Bills team and if he continues to succeed, perhaps the Bills will owe part of that success to Phil Mickelson. Happy Halloween, indeed.
